This month's featured artist is quite unique. I have to admit that I have a real passion for some different types of music. This band is one of those sounds that I have a personal passion for. Welcome J.P. McDermott and Western Bop to the center stage this month.You might ask, what is a Western Bop? Well, for those of you that were born too late, let me fill you in. Once upon a time there was country music,western music, and the blues too. One day they all sort of got married and became what was know as the Rockabilly Sound! My oldest musical recollection is of hearing an old Johnny Cash song called Hey Porter. When I spoke with J.P. he too remembered that tune too. First off his knowledge of Rockabilly was excellent, and so is his sound too. J.P., as he is known to his friends, is a local boy who grew up in the Prince Georges County Suburbs where he began to play the guitar at the ripe young age of 16.J.P. said he played in your typical rock bands when he was younger but about two years ago something up and bit him...The Rockabilly Bug had hit him. He related to me how he went out at an open mike show and the rest is history, The Birth of J.P. and the Western Bop Band.The band consist of Andy Rutherford Lead Guitar, Eric Shramek Slap Bass, and Drummer Kenny Haddaway. J.P. said they had recently did some studio work in which the band recorded on equipment that was similar to the vintage equipment like the Sun Record Studio had used. When I heard the recording, I must tell you AUTHENTIC ROCKABILLY!!! The vintage instruments, that they used, and the combination of the equipment, made a sound unlike anything heard on the digital equipment that we hear today. J.P.'s voice is a mix of a mornful, lonesome cry to the past that few young artist have ever been exposed to. The band is outstanding with their authentic sound that harkens back to the day of the Sun Record Studio sessions.J.P. said he felt that 1954 was really the year in which the rockabilly sound became a new sound. He cited Ray Price's "Crazy Arms" as being a catalyst for the Honky Tonk Shuffle sound that has gone on to be the true roots of the rock sound of today. He said the mix of Rhythm and Blues, Country and Western swing gave birth to a new sound that he really love to both play and to hear as well.I asked J.P., "Who is the single artist that you liked from the '50's era?" He told be that one of his biggest influences was Buddy Holly and that he had loved his sound since the age of 9, but that he could not really cite any one musician, but rather a year, the year of 1954! The Year that gave us the Sound! If you want an authentic sound that is Home cooked, Local, and should be National, then give J.P. McDermott and Western Bop your time...This is one experience that you will not regret!
